Daughter helps family restaurant Lee's Noodle House in Santa Rosa with viral TikTok video ABC7 Los Angeles

Among their most sought-after dishes are the salted shredded chicken, ginger scallion chicken, XO sauce fried rice (also known as drunken cat fried rice), beef stew, and crispy large intestines. For dessert, they offer peach gum, a superfood and antioxidant derived from peach and Chinese wild peach trees, which has gained popularity in Chinese traditional medicine in recent years. Henry’s Cuisine is a small restaurant specializing in Cantonese cuisine with a hint of Vietnamese influence. Their menu features classic dishes like XO fried rice, vermicelli noodles, salted egg shrimp, and deep-fried salted pig feet.

RiceBox

Korean banquet noodles, or janchi guksu, are proof that Korean flavors aren’t necessarily a dialed-up, in-your-face affair. With a helping hand from zucchini, puffy morsels of fried bean curd and zucchini for texture, it’s a slightly unorthodox but delicious rendition of the Korean wedding favorite. Ho Kee is known for its roast duck and array of Cantonese and Hong Kong comfort dishes, but the specialty is its see fong choi (private kitchen dishes). These specialty menu items, which can be on the pricier side, include abalone and sea cucumber, winter melon soup, steamed egg custard in crab shell, garlic steamed razor clams, and jumbo shrimp. Whether it's jjajangmyeon or jjamppong, you can't really go wrong with the Korean Chinese options at Lee's Noodles.

Traditional Noodle Soup

The daily chef specials and long list of Cantonese specialities makes it a neighborhood must. There are many renditions of popular tofu dishes on the menu, like fish and tofu in black bean sauce, and  Cantonese-style soups that can take hours to make, like the crab meat fish maw soup. Seafood is a main draw here, including the salt and pepper shrimp, black bean clams, and salty fish fried rice. Hot Spot Nabe is a cozy, family-owned eatery with limited seating that specializes in healthy Cantonese cuisine. Their menu boasts an extensive selection of traditional Cantonese soups, including the meticulously prepared pepper pork belly chicken soup, which requires hours of simmering.

Hidden inside a nondescript parking lot is a small mom-and-pop spot that’s been around for decades. The affordable Cantonese barbecue meats are better tasting than the big-name establishments in the area. In fact, ACC is a wholesaler to many popular San Gabriel Valley restaurants that cannot afford to have a barbecue master in-house. The restaurant serves both an Americanized and a traditional Chinese menu, along with daily specials like Hong Kong egg waffles, beef noodle soup, and even a handful of non-Cantonese dishes.

They also offer a selection of higher-priced fresh seafood options, including garlic-steamed Alaska king crab, lobster, tiger prawns, live fish, Dungeness crab, and various clams. Tam’s Noodle House opened during the pandemic selling only frozen Hong Kong-style wontons and dumplings. Now that on-site dining is allowed again, the restaurant serves Hong Kong- and Cantonese-style cafe foods like curry fish balls, barbecue pork, beef stew lo mien, steamed rice roll, and Hong Kong-style milk tea.

This Korean import serves Ham Heung-style mulnaengmyeon, where the noodles are typically made from sweet potato starch. The dish is deceptively simple, but Ojangdong’s refreshing rendition of both bibimnaengmyeon (spicy Korean cold noodles) and mulnaengmyeon merit a try. In the latter dish, Ojangdong’s fantastic, chewy noodles and the depth of flavor in the beef broth align to give Yu Chun a serious run for the city’s best. Bistro 1968 is considered one of the most expensive dim sum restaurants in Los Angeles, but its specialty items and high quality distinguish it from others. Bistro 1968 stands out as one of the few dim sum restaurants serving dim sum all day. Typically, the rolls are filled with shrimp, pork, beef, fish, or veggies and topped with a sweet soy sauce.

Their commitment to healthy cooking aligns with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, ensuring nourishing and wholesome meals. It’s worth noting that the rice platters are freshly steamed upon ordering, so some waiting time should be expected. The Congee offers humongous portions of wontons, lo mein, fish balls, beef balls, and other Hong Kong-style dishes, but its namesake congee is the star. Congee, pronounced jook in Cantonese, is a porridge made from rice usually served for breakfast or at dim sum.

Jaengban Jjajangmyeon at Paik’s Noodle House

Tam’s offers three varieties of egg noodles, including wonton-style egg noodles, rice noodles, and flat egg noodles. A hallmark of a true Hong Kong-style cafe is a menu with enough variety to give the Cheesecake Factory a run for its money. The menu here, which varies at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, has something for everyone. There is a wide array of standard classics like pork chop baked tomato rice, pineapple buns with pork cutlet, clay pot rice, congee, noodles, and scallop fried rice. There are also an array of Chinese-American dishes like honey-glazed spare ribs and honey walnut shrimp.

Guide to Russian River Valley: Redwoods

Rice Box is the first hip and modern Cantonese restaurant in Los Angeles that really hits the mark. Diners can create custom rice boxes, choosing from the signature char siu (barbecued pork), black soy-poached chicken, crispy seven spice pork belly, or a vegan special. Chef and co-owner Leo Lee uses only organic produce, as well as ethically-sourced, sustainable, and hormone-free meat. The signature char siu barbecued pork uses Duroc pork and is marinated in a family recipe that’s been passed down for more than three decades. The triple-roasted porchetta is marinated overnight, cured, and roasted for three hours in the oven and then smoked.

"A lot of people from the community come out and support us and I'm really thankful," said Vuong Le. "It's been like really slow, and I think a lot of people left because of the pandemic and the fires so I felt really sorry for them," Le told ABC7 News in the Bay Area. SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- The pandemic hit small businesses especially hard and many restaurants are still feeling the lasting impact. “I wanted to share the video because their food is so good and put in a lot of work for it, very authentic,” said Jennifer Le, the daughter of the owners of Lee’s Noodle House. "Big difference. A lot of people from the community come out and support us and I'm really thankful," said Vuong Le. "All of us came out of the pandemic discovering that the restaurants we used to go to may not be open anymore," said digital marketer Greg Jarboe.

The cold, chewy acorn-starch noodles are counter-balanced with the crunchy texture of thinly sliced red cabbage, carrots and cucumbers. Mixed together, it's something like a Korean noodle salad, with gochujang spice binding the entire light and refreshing experience with savory and sweet undertones. The jjampong doesn't skimp on the seafood, and the heat from the spices can reach pretty extreme levels.

Alice’s Kitchen is operated by the family that opened the original Delicious Food Corner in Monterey Park. The best dim sum to order is the special “To To” ma lai go sponge cake, which is layered with salted duck yolk and made using a recipe from a famous Hong Kong chef and food personality (梁文韜). The suckling pig and lobster meal for 10 people consists of a half order of suckling pig, five lobster dishes, as well as stir-fried noodles, roasted garlic chicken, and dessert. Delicious Food Corner is a chain of Hong Kong-style diners with multiple locations in the San Gabriel Valley. Known for its quick service and budget-friendly prices, the restaurant serves a diverse range of Cantonese and Western dishes.

The slightly spicy version of the Korean Chinese classic is cheap, greasy, carbohydrate-laden junk food of the most crave-worthy order. Myung Dong's kalguksu refers to a posh district in Seoul, north of the Han River (Gangbuk) where there is actually an alley of competing kalguksu spots squeezed into one small area. The kimchi here is notoriously garlic-heavy and great for dunking in the soup to give it a little heat and extra flavor.

The jjajangmyeon isn't a traditional rendition (it uses the same hand-pulled noodles from the jjamppong, for one), but it's addictive eating if you're a fan of the caramelized black bean sauce being rounded out with a bit of sweetness. Bits of grated sweet potato give it a welcome texture that thwarts some of the usual greasiness and gives the jjajang sauce a texture similar to a fine Bolognese. China Gate has been a fixture in Koreatown for decades, and their jjajangmyeon is as delicious as ever.

Chicken Noodle Soup

The roast duck is a must-order, and the roast pork is only available on the weekends and can be preordered. When it comes to noodles from East Asian cultures, Korean cuisine boasts a staggering breadth of flavors and ways to enjoy the starchy staple at prices in Los Angeles that are generally reasonable. Mr. Chopsticks has been a mainstay in the area for over three decades and is one of a few Cantonese restaurants that still provides free soup at the start of the meal. The lunch menu includes 40-plus affordable and generously portioned specials such as beef chow fun, kung pao shrimp, chicken wings, and salt and pepper shrimp. With 24-hour advance notice, Mr. Chopsticks prepares its famous seafood winter melon soup from scratch, using ingredients from the restaurant’s garden. The entire menu is based on traditional Chinese medicinal principles meant to balance the body for optimal health.

Fried Rice

"A huge percentage of them just disappeared in the last couple of years so finding a restaurant near me is one of the top search terms." "It's been like really slow and I think a lot of people left because of the pandemic and the fires so I felt really sorry for them," Le told ABC7 News. SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGO) -- The pandemic hit small businesses especially hard and many restaurants are still feeling the lasting impact.

The extensive menu features a variety of options, including pineapple pork buns, congee, clay pot rice, rice rolls, stir-fries, and dumplings. For folks craving traditional Cantonese cuisine or a fusion of Western flavors, Delicious Food Corner has something to satisfy every palate. Their compact dim sum menu combines beloved classics with unique creations, like the sticky rice with chicken, salted egg yolk, and mushrooms wrapped in lotus leaf and torched tableside with molten mozzarella.

Stir Fry

That’s all it took to change the fortunes of a struggling Santa Rosa restaurant — all because of a TikTok video that went viral. At every Korean BBQ outing, there is one unscrupulous person at your table who will survey the banchan, grab the dish of japchae and put it near them. Find that person, and take them to Jeon Ju, and order a plate of their perfectly made, Korean-party-ready japchae. Make sure to bring a book or have some reading material on your phone to avoid looking weird eating by yourself. "And it wasn't just, like, one solid weekend of business. It's been weeks of business, which has, I think, you know, changed their entire business from closing and being able to stay open, which is incredible," Altes said.

Landmark Cantonese Restaurants to Savor in Los Angeles

Classic flavors include chicken, abalone, pork, scallions, ginger, and thousand-year-old egg. Taste of MP, formerly New Lucky, is a renowned Cantonese food institution in the San Gabriel Valley. Must-try dishes include the silky clam steamed egg, wintermelon soup, salty duck yolk covered pumpkin sticks, and pickled pork belly. They offer affordable lunch specials until 5 pm and stand out by providing complimentary traditional soup during lunch and traditional Chinese dessert with dinner, a rare treat in the area. Yukgaejang, or Korean-style spicy beef soup, exists in a gray area of “soups with some noodles” alongside seolleongtang and gukbap where the noodles (usually dangmyeon, or glass noodles) are a relatively minor aspect of the dish.

"I think, with so much going on in the world, that people want some good news, and we need to get it more into the mix." "It just brings so much love, joy to my family because without the people from the community, I don't know if I can survive," said Vuong Le. But financial troubles started in 2017 when the deadly Tubbs Fire — then the largest wildfire in California history — devastated Santa Rosa. Just one month ago, Lee’s Noodle House in Santa Rosa was filled with empty chairs and tables. You can see the owners just standing there, instead of serving their signature Vietnamese food.

Worthy side dishes include an order of tangsuyuk (Korean sweet and sour pork) or the Dragon's tender Mongolian Beef. As long as the recipe doesn't change, few places are as worthy of being a permanent fixture on any "best Korean noodles" list as The Corner Place's dongchimi guksu. Refreshing, acidic, vinegary broth is paired with a bed of flour noodles that are simply gone too soon.

Chef Peter Lai offers off-menu dishes for dinner, including the crispy flower chicken and Dungeness crab curry with pan-fried vermicelli. Garden Cafe is another Hong Kong-style cafe with a menu as big as the Cheesecake Factory’s. Diners can order everything from Indonesian fried rice to wonton noodles, Singaporean-style vermicelli, and even mediocre steak specials. Both locations offer special dishes each week that are advertised on paper menus that can only be obtained at the restaurant. There is a new dish everyday of the week that may include a Chiu Chow-style or five-spice duck, braised short ribs with red sauce, or a Western-style dinner. It’s important to note that both locations do not serve the same specials and the set dinner is only available for pick-up at 3 p.m.

"My dad always talks about how he is stressed and tired of waiting around, where we have to close early, so I kind of just made the video to help them out a little bit," said Le. "I just didn't expect it to blow up. I just thought, oh a couple people will see it." In the past two decades, the Southland’s Cantonese restaurants have gradually been replaced by Sichuan, Shanghai, and northern Chinese establishments due to an increase in mainland Chinese immigration. But even with stiff competition, many Cantonese restaurants have been able to stand the test of time. "My dad always talks about how he is stressed and tired of waiting around where we have to close early so I kind of just made the video to help them out a little bit," said Le. Jennifer Le posted about her family's restaurant back in January, urging people to try their Vietnamese restaurant in Santa Rosa, California.

We've added tons of new content that was developed specifically for this add-on over the past few years, and we have more content planned to be added to it in the future. The price is small, and is simply aimed at covering the costs involved with maintaining and developing this as a separate product, which we need to do at the moment because of the industry guidelines. The small charge allows us to continue to keep creating NEW content for this DLC.

You'll see something new or different each time you play. To date, there are hundreds of different stories, side-quests, and narratives, and thousands of branching stories and dynamic elements. Content is being added regularly, so it just keeps getting bigger and better! Each new game starts at the door as a blank canvas for your decisions.

This DLC patch adds "adult" features to the game including longer, uncut, explicit and sexy cutscenes as well as several playground/sandbox type interactions for the player. You will also be able to enable legacy interactable free-look intimacy scenes as an alternative to the cutscenes. I hadn't played in a while and the game version I was using didn't even show up on my list even though I could see it in downloads, etc.  So, I bought the new one for $25.

John Dee Holeman, Durhams Last Great Blues Elder, Dies at 92

We know what matters to you when choosing a shell contractor; getting the best company for the job, who will complete the build on time, on budget, and, for the lowest possible cost. Using state of the art scheduling and estimating software, daily onsite management, and, in house crews, we can deliver when others drop the ball. As South Florida’s leading James Hardie Elite Preferred contractor installing both Residential and Commercial siding, no one knows how to complete a quality siding installation or replacement project for less time or money than Holeman.

Why Professionals Choose Holman

He’s excited to be back again in the kitchen at his beloved restaurant, churning out its greatest hits and creating new dishes he hopes Atlantans will come to embrace. And while the first year of the pandemic caused he and wife and business partner Gina Hopkins to press pause on construction in Midtown, the long delay provided them an opportunity to rethink the overall vision for Holeman and Finch going forward. No matter your trade, Holman's array of storage and van accessory products let you customize your vehicles for your precise needs.

Installing and Building Since

Expect to see a larger selection of local and sustainable seafood on the menu in Midtown, and the possible return of Hopkins’s riff on gentlemen’s relish (anchovy paste) — one of the original dishes served at Holeman and Finch when it opened in 2008. Several English cheeses have been added, along with Sapelo Island clams tossed with bacon, bourbon and jalapenos. The entree section features Carolina flounder muniere served with roasted potatoes. The roasted truffle wrapped in bacon sitting atop sunchoke puree once served at Restaurant Eugene is also making an appearance on the opening menu at Holeman and Finch in Midtown.

Integrated Automotive Services Built for You

Whether you are looking for cost-effective aluminum impact glass windows, or new, energy star, double pane, Low-E impact windows, Holeman is your best choice. Retired Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. accepted the call to serve as Interim Senior Pastor from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. During the year the members reflected and acted upon the responsibility as the body of Christ to engage in productive stewardship and enhanced congregational care. To engage in meaningful outreach Holman CDC teamed up with Holman UMC to provide opportunities for positive and productive involvement with foster care families and foster care youth in the city of Los Angeles.

A total redesign now sees the exposed concrete and ceilings once planned for the space warmed up with beadboard, dark woods, framed art and photographs, and enclosed booths with tufted leather seating. To add a touch of modernity, the wood and slate bar called for in the original design was replaced with a sleek zinc bar top custom made in Savannah. We need the help of good genealogists to grow a completely free shared family tree to connect us all. In 1940, Farmer and Maid were the top reported jobs for men and women in the USA named Holeman.

The early founders included Ulysses S. Griggs, Sr., J.W. Bryant,  J.B. Jones, William Page, Ethel Page, Mrs. Charlie Jackson, Nina Lott, Mary Harris, and Chaplain James L. Jones. Early accounts of those first meetings indicate that the people always prayed together for guidance and depended on the presence of the Holy Spirit as they sought to create a new opportunity for the people of God. John Dee Holeman’s funeral will be held on Thursday, May 6, at Obies Chapel UHC. His family has a fundraiser for burial and funeral costs, which can be found here. Holeman’s legacy extended beyond music and into dance, too, mostly through his longtime performing partnership with pianist Quentin “Fris” Holloway. At shows, Holeman and Holloway would dance as much as they played—mostly “buckdancing,” an old-style involving lots of stomps and slaps.

We're not just in the automotive business, we're in the people business. Holman has been providing exceptional experiences and services since 1924. HoleHouse is a 2d adult game developed by DotArt on Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android. Right-hander Gavin Guidry replaced Holman and finished the seventh inning, and he recorded the first out of the eighth before handing the ball to left-hander Nate Ackenhausen. Holman allowed another run in the fourth after a wild pitch on a two-out, two-strike pitch with two runners in scoring position — the runners reached base on a walk and a hit by pitch.

An era of North Carolina music and arts ended early Friday morning with the death of John Dee Holeman, Durham’s last great blues elder. Holeman had turned 92 years old on April 4 and passed at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro. The official cause of death was a heart attack, following a prolonged period of ill health.

Holman allowed just one earned run and struck out nine batters in 6⅔ innings. Milazzo failed to put down a squeeze bunt in the fourth that resulted in Hayden Travinski getting thrown out at home. Three strikeouts after Pearson's leadoff double in the sixth turned into the other missed opportunity.

"... That game had every potential not to be 3-2 in the ninth inning with a walk-off win if we execute offensively the way we need to, in terms of within bats." But White and Jared Jones snapped LSU out of it with back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning, handing it a 2-1 lead. Tommy White struck out, but Pearson ripped a ball well over the center fielder's head to score Milazzo and end the game. Saturday's heroics against Auburn weren't quite as heroic, but Josh Pearson's walk-off double to secure LSU's 3-2 win at Alex Box Stadium was a big deal. It secured LSU's second consecutive series victory in Southeastern Conference play during a time when wins are a must for this team if it wants to reach an NCAA regional.

In Durham, he was a heavy equipment operator and construction worker. Auburn tallied its first run off of Holman in the third inning on a bunt single that turned into two bases because of an errant throw from Holman to first. Consecutive groundouts scored the unearned run and gave Auburn the first lead of the night. LSU put another runner in scoring position with less than two outs in the seventh when Larson hit a one-out double, but White and Pearson struck out to end the inning.

In Fuller’s day, blues players had made a living busking around Durham’s tobacco warehouses during the harvest season. Holeman and Lyon played house parties as well as joints where people of color had to order food from the back door in those Jim Crow days. Blind Boy Fuller was immensely popular at that time, and Holeman was influenced by his recordings of the distinctive Piedmont sound. The Piedmont region encompasses a chain of foothills that runs between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic coastal plain, from Virginia through North and South Carolina and Georgia down to Florida. That Desert House, California

desert house

"The house would replace the missing mountain that was scraped away, but not as a mountain, but a shadow or negative of the rock," said the architects, explaining how they imagined the design early on in the process. The earth finish, slatted cement board siding, and metal roofing harmonizes with the landscape and take advantage of the changing desert light. After months of arduous design and construction, Marmol and Becket are thrilled to escape Los Angeles for their idyllic desert retreat. The Blue Sky prototype house leads a second life as desert getaway for David McAdam and his partner Scott Smith.

A combined living and dining space, roughly square, lies at the center of the house. While the house favors an east-west axis, four long perpendicular wings extend in each cardinal direction from the living areas. Thoughtful placement of larger rooms at the end of each wing helps define adjacent outdoor rooms, with circulation occurring both indoors and out. The idea of a prefabricated house makes a lot of sense in a context like the desert where the harsh climate makes even the simplest of tasks challenging.

If it wasn’t for its reflective windows, STAAB Residence could’ve been just another one of modern desert houses. Dotted around a two-hectare site on the outskirts of Marrakech, this boxy desert house is made up of white blocks. As well as the main living spaces, the various buildings comprise a pool house, a caretaker’s residence and a garage. In an effort to integrate the unique desert landscape into their design as much as possible, studio The Ranch Mine came up with a really interesting layout for this house in Arizona.

These areas share a similar climate and history—two major factors that go into region's architecture. Small in scale and distinctively discreet, these projects merge programs, landscape, and local materials to shape intimate, reflective spaces. Few places in America have architects critically engaged vernacular techniques and building traditions like the Southwest. Explored by Spanish conquistadors over 500 years ago, native inhabitants like the Pueblo have lived throughout the area substantially longer.

The goal of occupying the home inward with some privacy while maintaining a connection with the outside. From prefab to site-built, and off the grid to plugged in, to follow are some of our favorite desert houses from the pages of Dwell. Albert Frey's tiny piece of paradise in Palm SpringsArchitect Albert Frey designed his own home as a natural continuation of the rocky Palm Springs hillside. The 800-square-foot structure includes a large boulder that juts right into the middle of his home, which was intentional and quite artistic. Frey reportedly spent a year researching the patterns of daylight on the site before breaking ground, wanting to make sure his slice of paradise was beautifully lit and within view of the tranquil landscape.

This, perhaps, the most unique of desert houses was originally built for an artist Bev Doolittle and her husband, but they ended up listing the property for $3 million. The south wing connects to the public realm and includes a carport and two long covered walkways. These walkways are separated by a massive stone wall and led to public and service entries, respectively. The east wing of the house is connected to the living space by a north-facing internal gallery and houses a master bedroom suite. To the west, a kitchen, service spaces, and staff quarters are reached by a covered breezeway.

They wanted the main residence with a guesthouse and studio outbuildings but also lots of nooks and gathering spaces. Though desert architecture has been around for as long as humans have been building shelters, more modern iterations can offer extremely valuable lessons on sustainability and vernacular design. When done well, homes in the desert tame the wild of arid conditions without overpowering the beauty of them. Below AD surveys seven incredible homes built into the desert that show the beauty of building in barren land. The company operates a design studio in St. George with numerous samples to consider, including flooring, cabinets, countertops and fixtures, plus full-size interior vignettes that people can walk through.

Not only does it include a lot of reflective glazed surfaces which make it look lightweight and breezy but it also appears to be floating. During the day, the interior of the house recedes and the views are more pronounced. At night the house completely dematerialises and the muted lighting and stars outside blend to form an infinite backdrop for contemplation. Unfortunately, the site had been graded in the 1960s when the area was first subdivided for development. A small flat pad had been created by flattening several rock outcroppings and filing in a saddle between the outcroppings.

In 1934, he and his wife Liliane commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build their weekend home along Bear Run in southwestern Pennsylvania—which would become Wright’s masterpiece Fallingwater—as well as Kaufmann’s office. The latest federal estimates show more than 181,000 Californians were unhoused in 2023, with nearly 70% living on the streets. After roughly 11 years living on the streets of San Diego, Rachel Hayes moved into an apartment last summer.

This five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house in Palm Springs, California, was designed to emphasize connection to the desert landscape while offering shelter from harsh climatic conditions. Large sliding glass walls open the living spaces and master bedroom to adjacent patios. Major outdoor rooms are enclosed by a row of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat.

Encompassing 730 acres, the development’s proximity to natural canyons allows homeowners to escape from the city while still enjoying convenient access to retail and services. Nestled among miles of hiking, biking and climbing trails in the Green Valley area, Divario invites residents to get closer to nature. The community features thoughtfully planned neighborhoods providing breathtaking desert and mountain vistas as well as endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

This desert house is well-named, as its layered walls of rammed earth, metal, concrete, and glass create a whimsical array of organic forms amid a natural desert landscape. The eclectic floating roof produces a combination of smaller, cozier living spaces and expansive vaulted rooms enclosed by the higher roof. Natural light illuminates this home, filtering in through artfully crafted fissures or shining off the strategically placed water body. Today, architects still draw from Neutra’s elegant approach to postwar modernism.

Inspired by vernacular desert architecture, this house by DUST comprises two solid volumes symmetrically organised around a central void and walls made from volcanic residue. It wasn’t until 1993, when Brent and Beth Harris, a financial executive and an architectural historian, moved in that there was an attempt to bring the Neutra house back to its original splendor piece by piece. When Kaufmann passed away in 1955, the Desert House cycled through several different owners, including Barry Manilow, and significant design changes were implemented to make the Desert House more comfortable for year-round living. Square footage expanded, the courtyard was covered, and air conditioning was added to the roof—but as a consequence of those "improvements," the house began to crumble and lose its soul. The gloriette, a serene outdoor room above the house, was Richard Neutra’s creative way of bypassing zoning codes that forbade two-story structures. The layouts usually open up to outdoor living spaces and materials that withstand harsh temperatures. A stepped foundation complements the modest orthogonal design of this desert house. With just 440 square feet of sheltered area, the isolated, modular house features an outside shed, porches, and awnings, making it smaller than the other houses on the list. The interiors, on the other hand, are deliberately designed to provide a calm and peaceful ambiance. This three-story desert house is made out of stacked boxes perched on the outskirts of a mountain range, with views of the urban area below. The home’s wall coating made of debris allows it to visibly meld with the untamed terrain.

Large open spaces visually connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, as the structure extends through the landscape with additional, covered outdoor living areas. Built on a plot of virgin land near the San Jacinto Mountains, this project features an eight-foot painted concrete wall that surrounds an interior space of 3,000 square feet. At once a refuge from the desert and an homage to its spaces and extraordinary light, this indoor-outdoor living space blurs the boundary between landscape and building. Although the landscape surrounding this house is quite harsh and unfriendly, that didn’t stop the owners from wanting to take it all in and welcoming the views into their home rather than wanting to isolate themselves inside.

Michael P. Johnson is responsible for not one, but two of the modern desert houses on our list. One is this cool long pavilion-like Ellsworth residence built over a depression in a hill. The home blends rustic board-formed concrete with precision concrete block, forming a visually striking modern structure emerging from the desert landscape. The black basalt tile and sleek travertine provide an attractive complement to the man-made elements, creating a striking contrast in texture and color.

Connected solely by an external steel staircase, the two spaces combine a cantilevered master suite/media room, central gallery, and a yellow-glass framed ‘Romeo and Juliet’ balcony. Designed to house specific works of art and living space, the Santa Fe Glass House overlooks the dramatic New Mexico landscape. The art collection includes pieces by James Turrell, Richard Serra, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, and Kiki Smith. The landscaping was carefully designed around the house to blur the boundaries between nature and art. Exploring mass and the many ways it can be defined, this desert house materializes fissures, facets, and hollowed forms.

Despite its remote rural location, the house was constructed on a site that had been flattened in the 1960s. This meant the building couldn't be staggered down the slope and was instead designed with a mostly level floorplate that ends at the edge of a precipice. Visitors entering Palm Springs from other desert cities will first come upon the Palm Springs Tramway gas station, designed in 1965 by Albert Frey and Robson Chambers, topped by a hyperbolic paraboloid roof. Making the unusual fountain from standard-sized materials, which will weather naturally over the years, kept the cost down, too. Also, they offer a poetic and visual feature by distinctly portraying the sunlight and its shadow through different times of the day.

It is a bright, modest, yet pleasant home surrounded by patios, gardens, and hectares of organic olive farms. Among the terraced gardens is a white, long, and thin water reservoir that doubles as a swimming pool. This desert house stands out because of its materials that embody the region’s architectural heritage. Light and space themselves become the focal points of the home as a result of the use of discrete materials. All interior areas have a semi-open nature, with the option of opening into an inner patio or garden.

"We face south-west, so the weather comes straight at us, and the wind is loaded with salt," says Hughes. The desert loft resident is involved in off-road activities and required a place, which would sustain its appearance through sandstorms and extensive heat. The entrance door, secluded behind the thick metal screen, leads to the largest area of the house, unifying the kitchen, the dining room and the living room.

This one may look new and fresh off the construction, but in reality the house was built in 1947. Designed by an Austrian modernist Richard Neutra, the house served as a winter vacation home for Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. and his family. Desert Nomad home is a collection of three cube-like rusted steel and glass structures, each with its own bathroom and a view of a different side of a cacti desert. Dry land has long carried a certain reputation—pounding sun, harsh temperature, maybe even inhospitable terrains—which is perhaps what makes homes built into the desert so fascinating. 25 LA Horror Movie Filming Locations to Visit This Halloween

haunted house in movies

The Dutch Colonial-style home still stands in Amityville, but its address has been changed from 112 Ocean Ave. to 108 Ocean in order to throw off curious tourists. The chapter starts where the previous installment left off, with Jazz, Lied, and Purson receiving the invitation to the Moebius Art Museum. They read over the pamphlet, which teases the museum’s main attraction, the terrifying painting of Galna-sama. The pamphlets scared as well as excited them as they made their way to the venue. Mairimashita Iruma-kun will be released on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 8 a.m.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (

The Uninvited is one of the first full-length haunted house movies, making it a cornerstone model moving forward for all other films to follow. The film's twist is one of those watercooler moments that rivals any horror movie ending. Without spoiling the climax, A Tale of Two Sisters uses the haunted house motif almost as a window dressing to obscure the psychological aspects at play in this immensely enthralling, supernatural flick. This unassuming El Segundo home played host to an extraordinary battle with the supernatural in the terrifying 1983 shocker, which was inspired by a real-life case of alleged paranormal activity in Culver City. But let’s be real, many haunted house movies are just that, which does not deter us.

‘American Horror Story’

However, this Stanley Kubrick masterpiece is so genius that it deserves to be in the upper echelons of basically every movie list ever written. Not only is it genuinely creepy—this tale of the Torrence family spending a winter stuck in a summertime resort is also rich in what-does-it-mean symbolism that’ll keep you guessing long after the credits roll. James Wan’s franchise-launching film is among the most successful, and most frightening, horror movies of the 2010s, and still looms large in a horror landscape that’s since moved through many sequels and spinoffs. Wan’s ability to wring maximum screams out of a good jump scare is, of course, legendary at this point. And while there’s no shortage of that kind of terror in The Conjuring, it’s the human struggle at its core that will keep you hooked.

Cristina Raines stars as Alison Parker, an unstable fashion model who moves into a Brooklyn brownstone only to discover that it is, in fact, the gateway to Hell. While it’s firmly rooted in dark, zany comedy and not horror, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice remains one of the great haunted house movies thanks to its focus on the expected tropes and how they twist when the perspectives get flipped. The haunted house is one of horror’s most time-honored tropes, a dark twisting of the place we call home into a maelstrom of terror and things that go bump in the night. There’s something eternal about the idea, so it’s no wonder that hundreds upon hundreds of filmmakers have channeled it for dark visions of their own.
